Four things decide whether a building visit works. Entry is timed almost everywhere, so the slot matters more than the price. A guide is worth it where the story is invisible, and pointless where the audio guide is good. Working churches ask for covered shoulders and knees. And a tower is usually stairs: Brunelleschi’s dome is 463 of them, with no lift and no way back down through the crowd.

Brunelleschi’s Dome
The dome went up without a full timber centring, two shells built as one with a herringbone brick pattern locking each course to the last. The climb runs in the cavity between those shells, 463 steps that narrow and lean as the curve tightens, and it comes out beside the lantern with the whole Arno valley underneath. Entry is timed to the minute and there is no lift.

The First Towers
The steel frame was worked out in Chicago in the 1880s, and it moved the load off the walls so windows could grow. Loop tours read the results back in order: heavy stone bases, terracotta cladding, the setbacks New York’s 1916 zoning law forced onto every tall lot. Glass and Vaulting
A Gothic vault is a structural argument you can stand under, and the glass is only possible because the load went into the ribs and out to the buttresses.
